Read Together
What is the Read Together program?
The Read Together program matches children ages 3 through 8 with trained volunteers who read to them on a weekly basis, one-on-one, at local libraries and after-school programs. Children form a strong bond with their adult reading mentor while gaining reading experience and an appreciation for various types of books.
How does it work?
Volunteers commit to read one-on-one with a child for one hour a week. All of our volunteers undergo training that includes the importance of reading aloud, tips on how to select books, handling distractions, conducting other literacy-related activities, and how to encourage family reading and library use.
The volunteer screening process includes Act 33 and 34 Clearances (criminal and child abuse background checks).
What are the benefits?
Reading to children and providing access to quality books is one of the best ways to encourage language development. Children who are exposed to reading at an early age make the symbol/language connection and are more likely to be reading at the appropriate age level by the end of third grade.
